07:39 pm - Age-old dream "You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between a left or right, but I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down— up to a man's age-old dream; the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order— or down to the totalitarianism of the ant heap, and regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course."
That's actually a Reagan quote, and he's complaining about how the left is drifting towards totalitarianism - they want government to offer too much security, and so on.
And yet, if you just read the quote for what it says, it sure sounds like a complaint about the current administration, doesn't it?
I'm with Reagan - when a conservative tells you (as Romney did recently) that "Our most basic civil liberty is the right to be kept alive..." (notice the verb "kept") then that age-old dream of the ultimate individual freedom consistent with law and order that Reagan spoke of has been lost.
Let's not trade any more freedom for security - regardless of their good motives, let's step away from their downward course.
No third term.

Comments:
It scares me to think that, as a society, we will not just accept tyranny but actively chase it down and pay for it. |
