09:42 am - Wizardy! Here's a good one - a substitute teacher fired for performing a magic trick - apparently they've accused him of Wizardry!
As Bugs Bunny observed- "What a bunch of maroons!"
This doesn't have anything to do with Florida being a Red State, does it?

10:18 am - Measles I've been very disappointed to see that Obama, McCain, and Clinton all jumped on the "I am suspicious of vaccinations" bandwagon. All over the US, people are drifting away from vaccinating their kids. But the evidence is that vaccinations are safe - and we really do not want the old diseases back, the ones that used to prey so heavily on children - like Measles (you have to click past an ad to read the article).

09:49 am - Free Comic Book Day Today is Free Comic Book Day.
Don't just sit there - take a kid to a comic book store! (the Bongo Comics Free-For-All look pretty good!)

08:49 am - Black Gold According to the AP:
"My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East" -John McCain
Hey, guess what kids? It turns out all that fighting was about Oil!
How'd have guessed that?

05:45 pm - Websites? We've got Websites! Supernova has started a new website: The Daily Cavy! You should check it out every day and get your dose of beautiful Guinea pigs!
Also, you might help her out by clicking that link a lot, cause Google is watching!
As for me, I've been plugging away at my webcomic, which continues to be the GREATEST thing you are not reading every day. Why not check it out at Rocketship A Go-Go?
And on the "geeky news" front, I ran an actual role-playing game the other night. Can you believe it? I've totally given up being Kewl and gone back to being geeky. How shall I impress all the girls now?

04:06 pm - Iraq: The First 5 years Iraq: The First 5 years
There's something odd about the anniversary - lots of (conservative) pundits have articles and interviews, talking about their personal journey and all that. But actual anti-war voices are still mostly outside of the public discourse.
I find this odd.
I mean, I said the war would go badly. I was proven right. Surely people should be asking my opinion about things moving forward, now that I am established as a person who was right about things?
When I am gone, people will say "That Stacey - she was right on the iraq war, right about the war on terror, right about global warming, right about evolution and torture and all those other things - it's too bad she was such a hippie though, you can't blame us for not listening to a hippie!"

07:50 am - Morning Politics. Right after 9/11, the very Reverend Jerry Falwell went on national TV and said that God sent us 9/11 because he was mad at America - something about gay people and women having the vote.
Boy, it's a good think Senator Obama didn't go to that church - he might be in trouble now. Can you imagine a religious authority daring to say bad things about America?

07:39 pm - Age-old dream "You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between a left or right, but I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down— up to a man's age-old dream; the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order— or down to the totalitarianism of the ant heap, and regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course."
That's actually a Reagan quote, and he's complaining about how the left is drifting towards totalitarianism - they want government to offer too much security, and so on.
And yet, if you just read the quote for what it says, it sure sounds like a complaint about the current administration, doesn't it?
I'm with Reagan - when a conservative tells you (as Romney did recently) that "Our most basic civil liberty is the right to be kept alive..." (notice the verb "kept") then that age-old dream of the ultimate individual freedom consistent with law and order that Reagan spoke of has been lost.
Let's not trade any more freedom for security - regardless of their good motives, let's step away from their downward course.
No third term.

10:07 am - Why Republicans are Cowards I often find myself at a loss when it comes to politics. I never seem to fit in with the liberals or the conservatives. I always seem to want to fit in with the liberals, but somehow, that generally doesn't work.
So i was very happy to find this post today:
I'm not scared: Why Republicans are Cowards (and why we should say so!)
Because there's more to patriotism than being afraid of your shadow.

04:07 pm - Rocketship A Go-Go Hey - Read my webcomic.
Seriously. I'm no good at selling things, and this is my personal blog, so i feel no need to be circumspect. i work really, really hard at this comic. It dominates my free time and all my other times as well. If you're thinking "no one ever sees Princess Stacey anymore" this is the reason.
And it's really good.
Rocketship A Go-Go is Sci-fi adventure with a light touch. It's a daily webcomic with likeable characters and wondrous mysteries. Its drawn in a crisp, clear style and it has a wonderful mixture of modern and retro Sci-fi sensibilities. Its part 1950's monster movie and part family friendly transfest. Its got handsome tomboys and beautiful androids. Its got values. Its got glamour. It has lizard-men and giant ants and spaceships and testy robots. It puts friendship first.
Our slogan is "Together into the Unknown!" Frankly, the slogan alone should sell you.

Several hundred people read Rocketship A Go-Go every day. Don't you wish you were one of them?
Look at it this way - if a few hundred thousand people read my comic, they will turn it into a big time movie with, like, Devon Aoki and Clea DuVall and Leisha Hailey. And then they will pay me a lot of money and I will be rich. And if I'm rich, I can afford clothes and stuff, and I can go out and you'll see more of me.
Doesn't that sound nice?
So read my damn comic. Then tell all of your friends to read it. Then, send it to all your favorite blogs.
I'll totally owe you one.

08:39 am - Matthew 6:5-6
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

07:50 pm - Meet River A week and a half ago, someone found a kitten hiding in a paper bag out in the freezing rain. The kitten was starving and wild. They took the kitten to their vet.
On Sunday, she came home to live with us.

Meet River, the latest addition to our family.
River arrived under weight, under developed, and kinda feral.
On Sunday, River mostly hid from us.
On Monday, River hid from us a lot. We started to catch on just how little experience she had with people. We found her to be a mysterious mystery.
On Tuesday, River played a little bit. It was obvious to us that she was still too weak and sick to be a proper kitten. We took her to City Cats in Arlington where some expert care (and saline) put a new sparkle into her eye.
Now River is starting to act like a kitten. She's lobbying to be given the run of the house so she can meet Dali and Barda (um, not yet) and she's been trying to figure out how to enter the village and meet Gorgo and Tillicus who really, really fascinate her (sorry, but no).
She plays crazily - almost as much as you'd expect from a kitten. Today, for the first time, she really asked for food - and at last, she's starting to eat like a starving cat should eat.
River has a lot to learn. She doesn't know much about being a Kitten, or being a cat. I think we confuse her terribly. And she's just so small and scrawny that it can be a little scary.
But she lives here now. She has a home. She has a family. She has all the catfood, treats, and chicken soup she wants.

Merry Xmas River, and welcome home.

07:35 am - Fresh Air The latest national polls contain an odd note of Hope. With Obama and Huckabeee both doing well, you can almost imagine the two of them getting nominated.
Wouldn't Huckabee vs Obama be great for the country? Perhaps I'm being starry-eyed, but i feel like it would be a big step toward dismantling the Clinton-Rove blue-red split that is so damaging to our country.
At least, I think it would be a good step in that direction.
